Is Xperia XZ worth buying?

I’ve been using Sony phones since the company was “Sony Ericsson”. So, I’ve seen their handsets make the transition to Xperia. Not only did the name change but, their design and UI evolved.

Just over 2 weeks back I picked my Xperia XZ in Dubai.

So far; there are things i like and dislike about the phone.

What I like about the phone:

  • Camera:
    • Very nice camera with clear zoom.
    • It’s not that great in low lighting but, keep the “flash on” and it improves quality drastically.
    • Just avoid zooming in too much at night or in bad light.
  • Sim card and SD card:
    • Since i got the dual sim version; the 2nd sim or SD card option is OK - for me.
  • Storage:
    • 64GB internal memory out of which 57GB was available when i 1st switched it on.
    • As an early bird freebie; got a 64GB SD card and 8xx0mAh Sony power bank.
  • RAM:
    • 3GB (available 2.71GB) of DDR4 RAM is quite ideal.
    • 20 apps running simultaneously and there’s still 512–700MB to spare - no lags or auto shutdown.
  • USB:
    • This has the USB Type C port - don’t fret.
    • Get the converter between INR 150–800/- (depends on brand quality) if it doesn’t come bundled and you’re sorted.
    • The early adaptability of Type C is ideal; as it’s soon to become a standard.
  • Sound quality:
    • The loudspeaker is OK - not too soft or very loud.
    • Love the earbud headphones; amazing crystal clear clarity and noise cancellation.
  • Charging:
    • The converter does help to charge it with a regular wire instead of the fast-charge cable.
    • It’s a better option to help avoid overheating while charging.

So, what do I dislike about it?

  • Camera:
    • For a flagship Sony’s got to do better.
    • The low light issue is a let down for me.
  • USB:
    • Missing the old port.
    • The converter should be coupled with the phone.
  • It runs hot while:
    • Watching a 5 mins+ movie.
    • Browsing with GPS on.

So,…

Is it worth the MRP?

That depends.

Do you want a Sony device because;…

  1. It’s water resistant (not proof).
  2. Has a better camera than One+ 3.
  3. Bloatware is relatively low.
  4. Amazing sound clarity and noise cancellation.
  5. You can extend the 1 year Sony warranty by 2 years to make it 3 years (ask for residing country extended warranty if you’re buying from abroad).

If it’s a YES for 4-5 points - go get it.

If NO, to more than 2 points - forget about it.

Update:

Got the new OS update; Android 7.0 Nougat on 2nd December.
