Which is correct, “The meeting has been postponed” or “The meeting was postponed”?
Both are correct.
However, both are different.
Case 1 —
The meeting was postponed.
This means —
Suppose, a meeting was to be organised on 15 June. However, on 17 June, I came to know that the date is changed to 19 June. Finally, the meeting was conducted on 19 June.
Today is 23 June. Today, I can say
The meeting was postponed.
We use Simple Past Tense to signify an action completed in the Past.
Case 2 —
The meeting has been postponed.
This means —
Suppose, a meeting was supposed to be held on 19 June. But I came to know that it has been changed to 25 June.
Today, it is 23 June. The meeting is yet to be conducted.
Therefore, I will say —
The meeting has been postponed.
We use Present Perfect Tense when we wish to denote an event whose impact is yet to be felt or which is not yet completed fully.
I have tried to explain these in very easy terms.
These 2 things used to confuse me too.
I learnt it few days back in a book.
Thanking Ballu bisht (बल्लू बिष्ट) for the query —
