How to set the default paper size in Google Docs
Five basic steps:
- Create a new document.
- Click File > Page Setup.
- Change the page size to A4.
- Click Set as default.
- Click OK.

Change the page setup of a document
Use page setup to change page orientation, size, color, and margin size in Google Docs. You can also set indents and insert tab stops in a document.
Note: Page setup is not available in Google Sheets. You can change the size of your slides in Google Slides.
Change margin size
- Open a document in Google Docs.
- On the toolbar, click File > Page setup.
- Under "Margins," enter the margin size in inches.
- Click OK.
Note: You can also change the margins on the ruler. Click the edge of the gray area and drag it left or right.
Change page orientation
- Open a document in Google Docs.
- On the toolbar, click File > Page setup.
- Under "Orientation," click Portrait or Landscape.
- Click OK.
Set indents
You can indent one paragraph at a time or several.
- Open a document in Google Docs.
- Select the text you want to indent.
- Choose the type of indentation.First line indent: To indent the first line of a paragraph, drag the blue rectangle on the ruler.Left indent: To change the left margin of a selected paragraph, drag the blue triangle on the left side of the ruler.Right indent: To change the right margin of a selected paragraph, drag the blue triangle on the right side of the ruler.
Add and remove tab stops
Tab stops affect the paragraphs of a document and set how the text is positioned.
Add a tab stop
- Open a document in Google Docs.
- Click the ruler and choose a type of tab stop from the menu.Left tab-stop: Left aligns text to the tab stop.Center tab-stop: Center aligns text to the tab stop.Right tab-stop: Right aligns text to the tab stop.
- The tab stop will show on the ruler as a left or right pointing triangle, or as a diamond.
Remove a tab stop
- Click the tab stop on the ruler.
- Drag it off the ruler.
Note: You can move text between tab stops on the same line by pressing "tab" on your keyboard.
Set page setup as default
You can save changes so that new documents open with the settings you chose.
- Open a document in Google Docs.
- On the toolbar, click File > Page setup.
- Change the page setup.
- Click Set as default > OK.
