IP rating também é conhecido como Ingress Protection ou Classificação Internacional de Proteção que são definidos de acordo com a norma internacional EN 60529 (British BS EN 60529:1992, European IEC 60509:1989). Estas normas são usadas para definir os níveis de eficácia de vedação de invólucros elétricos contra intrusão de corpos estranhos como sujeira e água.
